From: administrator Matt Maldre (artiwu@spudart.org)

I would like to welcome all the students new to the artiwu listserv. The listserv serves to enhance communication amoung iwu art people (students and alumni).

HERE'S WHAT IT DOES FOR YOU
-Provides a forum for talk on artsy phartsy stuff (thoughts on art)
-Awares you of future art events in Chicago (and Bloomington)
-Lets you know whats happening to those who left IWU
-Job postings will be available (let's network, people!)
-Hear what other poeple's plans are and help each other to achieve their goals
-Hear what the Chicago art scene is like
-Find out if a current show you want to see is crap or great

WHAT IS A LISTSERV?
A listserv is a list of people with an e-mail address. All the people in this list can communicate with each other through one e-mail address, artiwu@spudart.org. This one address will collect the letters recieved from the individual people and send them out the whole list of people, so eveyone may communicate with each other. This letter is one of the “collected letters” send out to everyone.

YOUR INFO
All the students new to this listserv will be recieving a form via email for your own profile on the website. (and those who haven't yet filled out a form will be recieving one too) If you would like a form on paper, just ask. My contact info is at the bottom of this letter.

Subject: QUOTE: Art and Architecture
Date: Monday, December 8, 1998 17:46:59
From: Matt Maldre (spudart@aol.com)

I thought this was a funny and true quote comparing design and architecture:

Like an overeager, pimply-faced younger sibling, graphic design is what architecture never wants to be: namely, packaging, ornament, frame, and sign. Architecture says "Experience, Space, Tactility, Drama, Eternity," while graphic design says, "Can I help you? Do I look okay? Buy me. Read me. Eat me. Drink me!"
Lupton, Ellen and J. Abbott Miller, "Critical Way Finding" Looking Closer 2: Critical Writings on Graphic Design, ed. Michael Bierut, William Drenttel, Steven Heller and DK Holland (New York: Allworth Press, 1997), 201-212.

Any comments on this quote? Send 'em to this digest listserv!
