The 20 Most Overrated Artists of the Twentieth Century as Voted by Readers of Coagula

1. Julian Schnabel (153 points)
The insufferable bombast, the infernal posing, the
pseudoliterate pretension; is he really overrated?

2. Joan Miro (139 points)
The best advertisement against modernism

3. Keith Haring (125 points)
Basing a career on appropiating kindergarten stick figures may
land you in a few collections, but taste catches up with
everyone, eventually.

4. Georgia O'Keefe (118 points)
Her commission to paint the ladies' powder room of the
Rockefeller Center epitomizes the true appropiateness of her art.

5. Frank Stella (117 points)
Like Dylan, should've died in 1966.

6. David Hockney (111 points)
Refer to Matisse (#9) sans all but the trash compactor.

7. Robert Motherwell (108 points)
Elegy to a big American ego.

8. Helen Frankethaler (102 points)
Better remembered as the mother of tie-dye.

Artists Recruited For Gateways

Urban Gateways: The Center for Arts in Education is calling all professional artists in dance, music, theater, literary and visual arts to join them in working in an educational setting with children in the Chicago metropolitan area. Through a hands-on experience with teachers and students, artists will have the opportunity to enhance a child's understanding of the multi-faceted art world.

Urban Gateways is a nonprofit arts education organization whose goal is to improve the quality of education for children by incorporating the arts into their daily lives. With an Urban Gateways art experience, participants encounter the professional work of artists from the Chicago area and around the world, engage in creating and appreciating art, and reflect upon the process. Programs help children, teachers, and parents connect the art experience with their lives, neighborhoods, and classroom subject matter.

Based on its creative and innovative concept, Urban Gateways was presented with the 1995 President's National Medal of Art and remains one of Chicago's leading arts education organizations. While the majority of Urban Gateway's clients are school-based, its programs are adaptable to any learning environment.

To be accepted as an Urban Gateways artist, three or more years of professional experience in the art form of a specific medium and the ability to communicate in English as the primary language is needed. Prior work experience with children is preferred.

For further information on Urban Gateways programs, or to request an artist application, call Tim Sauers at (312) 922-0440, Ext. 229.
