From: Matt Maldre <matt@spudart.org>

I was going to post one summary of what's happening with the arts and the government. But I found way too much information, so I thought I'd break it up into seperate posts and stick 'em in upcoming digests.

So there's a new forum of discussion for artiwu: "Government and the Arts". I'm welcoming anybody to voice any opinions, thoughts, links, to this issue. Please send your email to artiwu@spudart.org (or if you'd like to write columns on this issue, that would be cool too)

For now I'm posting a link to a story on the Communication Arts website about copyright with digital media.

LANDMARK VICTORY ON ELECTRONIC RIGHTS
In a landmark decision favoring creative artists, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals has held that the transfer of rights in traditional media does not transfer electronic rights.

Upcoming issues:
* Bush's proposal for the NEA Budget
* California - Land Of The Arts?
* Congress Weighs Tax Breaks For Artists

i had a subscription to Art Calendar for a few years. it has *excellent* listings in the back for juried shows, competitions, jobs, art fairs, stuff like that. the articles are often focused on the practical side of being an artist, like what should be in a contract between an artist and a gallery, and what shippers to use, and articles on various techniques.

it is about $36/year for a subscription. the reason i stopped getting it is because their editing was terrible. there were tons of typos, grammatical errors, sentences that would just end in nothing... these errors made it hard for me to trust the content of the articles - it just left a negative impression. but that's not to say that the articles actually *were* bad - bad editing just personally drives me nuts. however, i received a notice in the mail from them recently saying they were under new editorship, so maybe it has improved in this arena.

they do offer a multitude of monographs on a ton of subjects. i actually bought one on taking photographs/slides of your art, and it was pretty helpful.

my advice is buy an issue first and see how you like it before you get a subscription.

:) laura

As the student start spring break this weekend and next week. Artiwu will skip next tuesday and post the next digest when the students come back to school. The next digest will appear Tuesday, March 28. I am still welcoming your posts during spring break.

Have fun! Oh, don't really bother going the MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART in Chicago. The shows they have up there right now really blow. (unless you like Gilbert and George...i'll also have to share my story of how I scared Gilbert and George three times in one evening).
