________________________________________________ 1. Subject: "Frida" - Sooooooo Much Better Than Pollock From: "Joanna Goebel (97) Date: Mon, 02 Dec 2002 Laura Kesselring and I went to see "Frida" last Saturday, and I believe I can speak for both of us when I say it was quite impressve. Julie Taymor's dream-like treatment of visual effects and stylized stop-action animation function seamlessly in telling Kahlo's remarkable life story. It successfully allows the viewer to sense the artist's emotional and physical pain, and their influence on her highly personal and intuitive approach to painting. Salma Hayek disappears into the lead role. As she leads viewers through Kahlo's development as a painter and her volatile relationship with muralist Diego Rivera, the audience also becomes acquainted with the socio-political upheaval of 1920's Mexico, which played a crucial role in both artists' work. Go and see this film. Joanna Goebel ('97) ________________________________________________ 2. Subject: "Frida" - Go See Frida From: Rachelle Street (01) Date: Fri, 29 Nov 2002 i saw the frida movie and my recomendation is to go see it, but with a grain of salt. it's beautifully done--the color is amazing, and salma heyack does a really good job of portraying frida kahlo. however, as someone who knows too much about the real life of frida kahlo, i wasn't buying certain things. like her pain. she was in constant pain her entire life and could barely walk later in life yet the movie had frida dancing and climbing pyramids. she also had polio when she was six and wore pants and long skirts to hide her deformed leg. yet the first scene has her running around in a short skirt. i was a bit skeptical when they cast an english actor as diego rivera but he pulls it off all right. they do a good job of not simply making him a monster and frida gave as good as she got. check it out. it's worth the six or eight or ten bucks, depending on where you live. *** note from artiwu moderator: if anybody has more reviews on Frida, please send them to artiwu@spudart.org ________________________________________________ 3. Subject: Member site of the week: http://www.ctrust.net From: Camm Rowland (03) ctrust.net is a small portfolio of some of my work...from painting to print design. it is a simple list, no flash and no Flash&Mac250;. i wanted to keep track of what i had done, because god knows i wouldn't remember half of these otherwise...subsequently, and unintentionally, it has lead to a bit of freelance work which keeps my car (kinda) running. next year i will be merging with Microsoft (ctrust.msn.com) in an attempt to monopolize the global art market. http://www.ctrust.net ________________________________________________ 4. Subject: fun stuff: The Genius of Flushable Art From: Matt Maldre (97) Date: Fri, 29 Nov 2002 Art Truism #873: The Public does not appreciate art which includes toilets. The Public is particularly irked by artistic toilets combined with religious imagery. But any toilets at all, even immaculate ones with books on top, are unlikely to be well-received at your next exhibition. Nonetheless, artists continue to use the porcelain repositories in everything from sculpture to photography, and a few galleries have even dedicated whole shows to them.
